INTRODUCING CHAPTR

Ask a room of people to define the future of work, and you’ll likely get a dozen different answers. For some, it’s about focusing on more creative goals and automating daily tasks. To others, it creates a fear of being replaced in the near future. To us, the future of work means working alongside AI. Being in control of the best technology instead of being controlled by it.

CHAPTR is a part of the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group alongside businesses like Springer Nature, Digital Science and Macmillan Publishers. A dynamic startup fueled by our passion for technology and redefining the future of work. We build cutting-edge products and relentlessly push the boundaries of what is possible.

We're actively building a diverse team because diversity fuels fun and innovation. If you feel you may not meet all job requirements, apply anyway; we understand impostor syndrome, but won't let it hinder hiring the best. We're a remote, #familyfirst company, offering flexibility while staying committed to our mission. If you're excited about innovation, eager to propel our projects, and passionate about AI, join CHAPTR on this thrilling journey.

THE ROLE

As a Senior AI Research Engineer, you will be responsible for exploring, testing, and validating emerging AI technology. This role is highly experimental, focusing on rapid prototyping, proof-of-concept development, and research-driven innovation.

The emphasis is on systematically exploring and understanding new AI technology (e.g. multimodal models) & architecture patterns (e.g. multi-agent systems), and transforming them into actionable insights and MVP projects.

In this role, you will be flexibly assigned to short-term PoC projects & mid-term rapid MVP projects based on your preferences, skills and company priorities.

Our current Tech-Stack: Google Cloud, Firebase, Python, Typescript, Terraform, Github, Cloud Firestore, EventArc, PubSub, GCIP, Cloud Storage, Cloud Functions v2, React, BigQuery, Github Actions, commercial AI services, Open Source AI Models.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Design and execute ambitious short-lived experimental projects, building cloud-native, AI-powered proof-of-concepts to explore the art of the possible with emerging technologies in small teams.

  • Collaboratively design & implement solutions to complex problems based on the latest research combined with engineering best practices.

  • Plan, support and execute rapid innovation experiments (“Labs Days”), driving the exploration and adoption of cutting-edge AI capabilities within CHAPTR.

  • Actively distribute acquired knowledge and experimental insights within CHAPTR to enable upskilling and stimulate valuable discussions about future possibilities.

  • Effectively & efficiently plan and track your work in our task tracking tool.

  • Collaborate closely with product teams to transition promising research and PoCs into production.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Friendly, concise, audience-oriented communication in written and spoken form (English).

  • Pragmatic, result-oriented analytical problem-solving skills that can overcome ambiguity.

  • Self-organised, purpose-driven individual who likes to collaborate with and enable their team.

  • Proven experience in an innovation-focused, research-oriented, or experimental engineering role.

  • Comfortable with challenging perspectives of other senior collaborators.

  • Deep expertise in the internals of modern AI architectures, model evaluation techniques, AI application evaluation methodologies, and leveraging generative AI in applications.

  • Proficiency with common AI frameworks and libraries (from PyTorch to LangChain).

  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly prototype, test, and iterate on new AI-powered concepts and use-cases in a structured, data-driven manner.

  • Experience bridging academic research with practical, applied engineering for PoC development.

  • Excellent ability to communicate complex matters clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Proactive ownership in driving research initiatives and experiments from ideation to handover.

  • Experience in pragmatically scoping and planning research experiments and PoC projects.

  • Disciplined approach to experimentation, documentation, and required levels of code quality.

  • Ability to quickly adopt new technologies, frameworks & programming languages.

  • Ability to refine requirements with non-technical stakeholders based on vague ideas.

WHAT WE’D LOVE TO SEE

  • Experience building lean, resilient, event-driven cloud-native applications - Full-Stack.

  • Experience with agentic systems

  • Strong experience in applied research methodologies
